What is ergothioneine?

Ergothioneine is a natural amino acid derivative of histidine that acts as a powerful antioxidant and cellular protector. Although the human body cannot synthesize it, it possesses a specific transporter  (OCTN1 Organic Cation Transporter Novel Type 1) which selectively captures it and accumulates it in tissues with high metabolic activity or exposed to oxidative stress, such as the skin, liver, mitochondria, and red blood cells.

Mechanism of action of ergothioneine

Ergothioneine functions as an endogenous defense system against oxidative damage. It neutralizes free radicals and reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, protecting key cellular structures such as mitochondria, DNA, and lipid membranes. Unlike other antioxidants, ergothioneine is not rapidly consumed, it has a long half-life and is naturally recycled, providing a prolonged and stable protective effect.

In addition, it modulates signaling pathways involved in inflammation and cellular aging, helping to preserve fibroblast vitality and maintain the integrity of the extracellular matrix.

Applications of Ergothioneine in Aesthetic Medicine In aesthetic medicine, ergothioneine is used for its ability to:

  • Protect dermal cells from oxidative stress and UV radiation, preventing premature aging.
  • Improve mitochondrial function, enhancing cellular energy and viability.
  • Optimize skin regeneration and boost the response to treatments such as laser, radiofrequency, or microneedling.
  • Reduce inflammation and post-procedure erythema, thanks to its soothing and cytokine-modulating action.

In advanced cosmetics, ergothioneine has become a highly valued ingredient for its ability to prevent photoaging and pollution-induced damage, increase skin radiance and tone uniformity by reducing oxidative stress in melanocytes, protect cellular DNA and epidermal lipids from peroxidation, and extend cell longevity while improving long-term skin quality.

Moreover, when combined with other antioxidants (such as vitamin C or glutathione), ergothioneine enhances their stability and efficacy, offering a synergistic defense against oxidative aging.

At Sisneo Bioscience, we use ergothioneine for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties in our Skin Radiance and Skin Volumizer products, helping to prevent oxidative stress and the formation of wrinkles.
