Toners are products used to care for the skin just after cleansing, with the aim of balancing the PH and preparing it for the subsequent use of other products such as moisturizers or serums.
Actually, the toner can be part of the last cleansing block or of the first facial care treatment block. This will depend on the ingredients it contains.
What is a tonic
They are particularly important for those with oily skin or who are prone to acne. They are also very effective in completing cleansing, especially when makeup or sunscreen has been used.
Toners can be used on all skin types. They serve to moisturize and reduce imperfections. Therefore, it is very important to include them in the daily routine, after a thorough cleansing that removes dirt, makeup and dead cells. In this way, both the toner and the following products can better access the skin.
Benefits of tonics
Some of the benefits of toners have already been mentioned above, but here is what a toner can do for your skin:
- They help to balance the pH of the skin, which may have been altered by the use of other products and cleansing.
- They reduce the appearance of pores by deep cleansing and reducing sebum build-up.
- They improve the absorption of treatment products by removing any cleaning residue that may hinder absorption.
- They provide additional hydration to the skin, because they are composed mainly of water.
- Some toners include ingredients such as aloe vera, which help reduce inflammation and soothe.
Toner application
The toner application protocol is very simple. First of all, as we have already said, the skin must be cleaned to remove any residue. Then follow the steps below:
Apply the tonic either on the skin or on a cotton pad. It does not matter if the face is dry or wet. Next:
- First apply the tonic. It can be done directly on the skin or with a cotton pad.
- This is followed by a gentle massage with upward and circular movements, which help to open the pores and thus improve the absorption of the ingredients.
- Finally, the skin is left to dry.
Once the toner application protocol has been completed, it is time to apply the moisturizing cream or any other treatment product.
Types of tonics according to the skin
Depending on the skin type, it is advisable to choose a tonic suitable for these characteristics.
For dry skin
People with dry skin need to moisturize and balance the PH, so they should use moisturizing tonics, which usually contain ingredients such as aloe vera, glycerin or natural oils.
You can also use products with hyaluronic acid, which is an element that not only moisturizes, but also helps to retain water. Could be very beneficial for this type of skin.
For mixed skin
Toners for mixed skin should reduce sebum production, especially in those areas most prone to develop oiliness such as the forehead, nose and chin, moisturize and de-inflate.
Some toners for combination skin also include ingredients against premature aging.
For oily skin
For those with oily skin, the main objective is to control sebum production. Therefore, astringent tonics with ingredients such as salicylic acid, witch hazel or peppermint are recommended to control sebum production.
Salicylic acid helps to deeply cleanse pores, witch hazel tightens pores and peppermint disinfects, moisturizes and balances the pH.
Pore cleansing prevents pore clogging, which reduces the risk of acne and blackheads.
For sensitive skin
In the case of people with sensitive skin, they will feel calm once the tonic has been used, as it produces some relief and improves irritations and redness. Sensitive skins are affected by any external agent such as cold or pollution.
So they should use mild tonics, which do not contain alcohol and if possible with ingredients such as rosehip, calendula or chamomile, which protect and soothe the skin.
With mature
When we are faced with aging skin, the ideal is to use tonics with ingredients that also serve as antioxidant treatment and vitamins to help rejuvenate the skin.
Moisturizing is a fundamental part of facial skin care. Hyaluronic acid can be used, which also serves, together with collagen, to firm the skin.
In order to rejuvenate, you can opt for ingredients such as vitamin C and E or rockrose hydrolat.
There is a toner for every skin type, but they should be part of a complete facial care process, including cleansing and specific treatments.
